The Bali will be in war soon ... That was the atmosphere when we look at the newspapers these days. Two parties in the dispute seemed to have been an integral spatial planning and insisted on his own. As if there was no way out unless one party must be defeated. Demontration and mass mobilization carried out and in turn loaded into headlines. Ridicule and harass each other was done openly. "It must be fun, yes, the behavior of his newspaper," was satire that often I receive as a journalist.
Really painful, because as if the media lives of the people fighting and unrest. More and more conflicts, more happy. The fellows among journalists themselves, most did have doubts. They say, all the dynamics that are newsworthy facts because it has news value. Also, that measures taken and directed in the newsroom.
The situation reminds me of the conversation around the early 2000s. At that time, many regions in Indonesia was hit by a prolonged conflict with the diverse roots of the problem. Starting from Aceh, Sambas (Borneo), to Ambon (Maluku). The role of the media spotlight because of the media as by a watering can of gasoline on top of all the bloody conflicts that.
Worse yet is because in the area, the media and journalists deemed to bias. Who want to be fixed in the center also will have difficulty because of the resource and then create a mapping which media are in the friends and enemies.
It was then that the term "Peace Journalism" or peace journalism is pushing the media and journalists to be more responsible in reporting the conflict. Namely, the responsibility to encourage the achievement of peace and pave the way for achieving a peaceful solution without violence. Facilitated a number of institutions, then, the reporters in the area and then gathered together to formulate joint embroidery encourage the application of peace journalism.
As in practice, peace journalism does not mean that journalists are not allowed to write about the conflict. Event by event and a variety of opinions can still be shown but journalists also must have a commitment to do things that encourage problem solution.
Among others:
- Cover All Sides: The media is not just preaching the voice and opinions of the parties in a balanced way (cover both sides), but also other parties having interests in the issue and could provide a neutral view of the interests of two parties. Interests together to solve problems peacefully should be highlighted.
- Media is the mediator: The media should explore and encourage the warring parties to propose realistic solutions. They should be encouraged to want to sacrifice its interests for the sake of a little greater. Media into space a healthy dialogue and not just a place to attack each other.
- Sensitive conflict: Media applying more stringent selection for the sources cited and provocative statements from each party that could exacerbate the problem, making the closed solution is realistic and acceptable to all parties. These data should be extracted and put forward more than mere prejudice.
- Build empathy: The media needs to evoke empathy (the ability to feel when you are in a different position) of each side making it easier for mutual understanding between the parties. Way, among others, by showing the human side when one of the victims.
Wah so serious really. Indeed it is. This paper is part of the disquiet over the current condition of Bali which also coincided with the chaotic PSSI (and also going bad again brought to Bali!. But yes Nurdin Khalid PSSI must lengserlah).
We are grateful to Bali has not experienced conflict as hard as other areas and therefore all people have the obligation to maintain this peaceful situation. This era is era of freedom of the press, but journalists and the media is actually tied to the social and journalistic ethics to promote the public interest above all other interests, including interests of the company's own press. Yes or not?.
